Fiji Police Touch Rugby Team Launches Community Health Drive Against Drugs and HIV

The Vodafone Fiji Ratu Sukuna Bowl Police Touch Rugby team is taking meaningful action beyond the rugby field by engaging in community initiatives. During this year’s tournament, themed “United for Victory – Stronger Together Against Drugs and HIV,” the team participated in an awareness session in Suva, aimed at equipping officers with essential knowledge to combat the impacts of drugs and HIV in Fijian communities.

Conducted by Dr. Sayal Sonika from the Sexual & Reproductive Health Clinic, the session focused on practical strategies for officers to engage the public and promote informed health choices. Armed with this training, Police officers will leverage various community events, including sports activities, to spread awareness about the dangers of drug use and unhealthy practices.

The commitment to community engagement underscores the team’s focus on preventive measures, with an emphasis on making smart choices and supporting one another. The Sukuna Touch Rugby challenge, which features a friendly competition between the Police and the Republic of Fiji Military Forces, is scheduled for Tuesday, October 18th, at the Nasova Grounds, starting at 9 am. This match not only promises to deliver an exciting spectacle but also serves a significant purpose in raising awareness for the local community.

This initiative aligns with the overarching messages presented during the Ratu Sukuna Bowl event launched by Major General Jone Kalouniwai, Commander of the Republic of Fiji Military Forces, emphasizing that this year’s competition is about more than just sports; it represents a community united against drug abuse. The collaborative effort between the Fiji Police Force and the Armed Forces reflects a shared commitment to fostering a healthier and drug-free Fiji, showcasing the power of unity in addressing social issues.

With the upcoming matches, hopes are high that these engagements will inspire and mobilize the community towards positive change.
