The Fiji Police Force is in the midst of developing a drug testing policy designed to combat rising concerns about substance abuse within the organization. Commissioner Rusiate Tudravu informed the public that while drug testing for recruits is currently required, the goal is now to implement testing for active officers.
Commissioner Tudravu emphasized the need for an updated police act that would provide law enforcement personnel with the requisite authority to conduct drug testing on their peers. He stated, “We are working diligently on our police act review, and meanwhile, we are creating a policy that addresses the pressing issues regarding drug use within the Fiji police force.”
This upcoming policy reflects ongoing efforts to enhance accountability within the police force, which have been increasingly highlighted in recent months. Following troubling instances of police officers engaging in illegal drug activities, there has been a significant push for reform. Acting Commissioner Juki Fong Chew had previously announced plans for a mandatory drug testing protocol, which may transition from random screenings to compulsory testing of all personnel, including civilian staff.
This initiative aligns with broader efforts to restore public trust and to illustrate that leadership within the police force is committed to transparency and integrity. Chew noted that the proactive measures include not only the drafting of the drug testing policy but also the participation of police leadership in drug tests themselves to set a strong example.
