The Fiji Police Force is committed to enhancing its facilities, particularly those designated for individuals in custody. This commitment follows allegations from former Supervisor of Elections, Mohammed Saneem, who reported experiencing ‘inhumane treatment’ during his detention last year. Acting Police Commissioner Sakeo Raikaci acknowledged these concerns and emphasized their intention to make improvements.
Mr. Raikaci stated, “We take note of the issues raised by Mr. Saneem and will try to improve. We are doing our best with what we have on the ground, with the facilities currently in use, which have remained unchanged for many years.”
The Commissioner mentioned that the Force, with the support of the Government and international partners, is actively seeking ways to upgrade these facilities while considering the existing infrastructure.
Earlier in the month, Saneem recounted being placed in a room with a disruptive individual and later being moved to a holding cell that he described as unsanitary. These claims are part of his ongoing challenge against charges related to allegations of receiving a corrupt benefit exceeding $55,000.
This initiative to enhance police facilities suggests a shift towards a more humane approach in the treatment of individuals in custody, which could be a positive development for human rights practices in Fiji.
