Fiji Police Target Pharmaceuticals Over Illegal Syringe Sales

The Fiji Police Force is looking into several pharmacies in the country that are accused of illegally selling or distributing syringes. Assistant Commissioner of Police – Operations (ACP) Livai Driu stated that this investigation follows significant drug busts involving methamphetamine.

According to ACP Driu, recent drug raids have revealed that many of the arrested individuals were already in possession of needles. This raises questions about how they obtained them, prompting further investigation by the police.

“We are actively working on this issue and targeting several pharmacies, particularly in the Central and Southern Division,” ACP Driu said. He noted that the investigation is challenging because many of the arrested individuals acquire needles from middlemen, making it difficult to trace back to the primary suppliers.

“They do not disclose their sources, which complicates our efforts,” he added. Over the past seven months, there has been a 37 percent increase in arrests linked to possession of methamphetamine, and police are committed to strengthening their operations.

ACP Driu emphasized the importance of integrity among pharmaceuticals in their practices, stating that needles should only be issued upon a doctor’s prescription. He also urged the public to report any suspicious activities in their communities.
