The Fiji Police Force is facing significant challenges in tackling drug-related issues among its target demographic of individuals aged 18 to 35. Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Reshmi Singh reported that between January and July of this year, the police charged 718 people in this age group for various drug offenses, including consumption and possession.
The statistics also indicated that 20 juveniles and 396 individuals aged 36 to 55 were charged during the same period. ASP Singh expressed concern that young adults are often absent from community engagement efforts and worship services, noting that while they frequent nightclubs, they are missing from supportive community environments.
She mentioned that while many families desire counseling or awareness programs for their children, rebellious behavior or estrangement from home complicates these efforts. ASP Singh also highlighted that, due to their adult status, individuals living with their parents cannot be compelled to participate in such programs, making outreach particularly difficult.
According to Singh, proper nurturing from parents or guardians is crucial in preventing children from associating with negative influences. However, she noted the challenge in encouraging young adults over 18, who often resist listening to authority, even that of their parents.
