The Fiji Police Force has taken action in response to threats made against the Verma family following the online sharing of a video involving their son, Bhavik Verma. The footage features a security guard named Iliesa Toga, who inadvertently recorded himself admitting fault in a recent car accident.
Assistant Commissioner of Police Operations, Livai Driu, confirmed that the police have contacted individuals who allegedly made threatening calls and sent text messages to the Verma family. The report concerning these threats was filed at the Samabula Police Station, and investigations are currently underway.
After the video was posted over the weekend, it garnered significant support for Mr. Toga while the Verma family faced backlash. In light of the alarming messages received, Sanjay Verma, Bhavik’s father, expressed his concerns for their family’s safety and requested an increase in police presence near their home in Suva.
In a twist of community spirit, many Fijians, both locally and internationally, praised Mr. Toga for his honesty in the video, seeing it as a “blessing in disguise.” This support has translated into financial assistance for him, with over FJD$3300 received through M-PAiSA transfers. Despite the positive outcome for Mr. Toga, he has appealed for understanding, urging the public not to direct hostility towards the Verma family.
This incident serves as a reminder of the power of community support and empathy, as many have rallied behind Mr. Toga while also calling for an end to the hostility directed at the Verma family. It showcases the potential for healing and understanding amidst conflict, encouraging a sense of unity in challenging times.
