The Fiji Police Force has issued a renewed warning about the risks associated with excessive alcohol consumption, following a tragic incident that led to the deaths of two men in a road accident in Waitolu, Naitasiri. The victims, aged 21 and 45, were reportedly intoxicated and engaged in a fight that escalated onto the main road, where a bus struck them, driven by a 30-year-old man.
The younger man was pronounced dead shortly after arriving at Vunidawa Hospital, while the older victim succumbed to his injuries the following morning at Colonial War Memorial Hospital. Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Mitieli Divuana emphasized that this incident highlights how alcohol can impair judgment and lead to devastating consequences. He urged everyone to take responsibility for their actions to ensure their own safety and the safety of others on the road.
SSP Divuana expressed concern for the families affected by this loss, especially as the holiday season approaches. He reiterated the importance of understanding how alcohol can impair one’s ability to make safe decisions and emphasized that road safety is a shared responsibility. Presently, the national road death toll stands at 58, which is an improvement compared to 74 at the same time last year, suggesting ongoing efforts in road safety awareness are making a positive impact.
In a hopeful note, the Fiji Police and road safety stakeholders remain committed to promoting responsible drinking and safe practices on the road. The community is encouraged to heed these warnings to prevent further tragedies, fostering a safer environment for everyone, especially during the festive season when celebrations often involve alcohol.
