The Fiji Police 7s rugby team made a generous contribution of $5,000 to the Fiji Cancer Society as part of their $7,000 prize from their recent victory at the Fiji Bitter Labasa Sevens tournament. The donation was presented by members of the winning team, led by assistant superintendent and Fiji Police sevens team manager Jaoji Basetimoala.
In his remarks, Basetimoala emphasized the importance of community engagement, stating that the Fiji Police’s new approach is centered on giving back to the community. He noted, “Previously, our police sevens team’s participation in local tournaments was our only means of engaging with the community, but now the commissioner is changing that approach.” He highlighted that the recent tournament prize money provided an opportunity to support a worthy cause, thereby reinforcing their commitment to community involvement.
Belinda Chan, the Chief Executive Officer of the Fiji Cancer Society, accepted the donation and expressed gratitude to the police officers for their support while congratulating them on their tournament success. She remarked that while the donation might seem modest, every cent would assist in covering essential costs like medication, transportation for patients, and other vital services. Chan pointed out that the funds will be allocated toward awareness programs and screening services, crucial for preventive healthcare.
Moreover, Chan expressed optimism for future collaboration between the Fiji Police and the Cancer Society, aiming for a united front in the battle against cancer in Fiji.
In addition to this significant donation, the Tappoo Group of Companies also contributed materials to support the Fiji Cancer Society, highlighting a growing network of community support in the fight against cancer. This collaborative spirit reflects the ongoing commitment of organizations in Fiji to improve health outcomes and support those in need.
