The Commissioner of Police, Rusiate Tudravu, has announced that the Fiji Police Force plans to enlist support from the military in addressing the growing concerns surrounding drug-related issues, largely due to constraints on resources. During a press conference, Tudravu indicated that he would be meeting with the military commander next Monday to discuss the collaboration further.

This initiative reflects a proactive approach to monitoring the situation before determining the necessity for additional support. Tudravu emphasized that his aim since assuming office has been to evaluate the challenges and capabilities of the police force effectively. “When I came in,” he remarked, “I decided we would review our operations and monitor the situation closely to understand how we can manage given our available resources.”

Despite the challenges, Tudravu highlighted that the police have made significant progress in combating drug-related incidents with their current resources. “We have done remarkably well in terms of the drugs that were uprooted. However, there comes a time when we need their support,” he acknowledged, noting that discussions with the military regarding assistance have been previously established.

Tudravu is keen on coordinating effectively with the military, indicating that they possess the necessary manpower to aid in combating drug issues across the country. He mentioned that the collaboration will be contingent upon thorough briefings between the police and the military commander, where they will share insights and strategies based on the current drug situation and police presence.

This partnership marks a step toward strengthening law enforcement efforts in Fiji, showcasing a commitment to tackling drug challenges collaboratively. As both the police and military prepare to engage in discussions, there is a shared hope that this alliance will enhance the capabilities needed to combat the drug crisis effectively.
