In the wake of the tragic death of an on-duty officer, the Fiji Police Force is actively pursuing funding to implement body-worn cameras for their officers and to enhance their overall equipment across the nation. Police Commissioner Rusiate Tudravu has indicated that discussions regarding the introduction of body cameras have already taken place.
Tudravu emphasized the challenges involved in rolling out this technology, highlighting that it is not merely a matter of purchasing the cameras. “You’re talking about technology, you’re talking about funding here. We are trying our best. Discussions have already been made,” he stated. He pointed out that while body cameras are a vital tool for promoting accountability and transparency within the police force, their successful implementation involves more than just distributing the devices.
“We’ll be having submissions in regards to well-equipping our police officers. It’s easy to say, bring in body cams. When you bring in body cams, you have to have the infrastructure in place within the organization. Where to keep it, where we will download everything that is in the body cam, and all these things come into it. And preparation is already in place. We are looking into it,” Tudravu explained.
As the investigation into the death of Police Constable 8012 Peniasi Racagi continues, the Fiji Police Force is also encouraging the public to express their condolences for the fallen officer by signing a condolence book located at their headquarters. This initiative aims to foster community support during this difficult time.
The pursuit of body-worn cameras not only reflects a commitment to modernize policing but also signifies the Force’s dedication to enhancing relations with the community by ensuring accountability in their operations.
