Fiji Police Revamps Cold Case Drive, Closes Key Case and Seeks Prosecutions

The Fiji Police Force has made notable advances in its efforts to address long-standing cold cases, as announced by Commissioner of Police Rusiate Tudravu during a recent press conference. He reported that progress has been achieved in six out of the nineteen active cold case investigations, including the closure of a significant case involving the alleged murder-suicide of a couple in Nasau on September 25, 2023, where foul play has been ruled out.

In addition to this closure, two cold cases have been forwarded to the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) for legal advice. These include the alleged murder of Josefa Tikoitoga, which dates back to 1993, and a 2013 incident in Nadroga involving a man who reportedly killed his wife and daughter before fleeing the country. Commissioner Tudravu mentioned that investigations have indicated that the suspect in the latter case is currently overseas.

Moreover, an additional three complex cases remain under active consultation with the ODPP, including a 2020 alleged murder case between Mana Island and Malolo and the historic disappearance of a Russian couple in the 1990s. This progress outlines the Fiji Police’s commitment to thoroughly examining these unresolved investigations and seeking closure for families affected by such tragedies.

The establishment of a dedicated cold case team has been a significant part of the police’s strategy, aimed at bringing a fresh perspective to challenging investigations. This initiative follows earlier plans discussed by Commissioner Tudravu to enhance the capabilities of the Fiji Police, including the integration of experienced former officers into the investigative process. These measures aim to boost efficiency and public trust, reflecting a re-commitment to justice for victims’ families.

The positive developments in the ongoing investigations symbolize hope for the victims’ families as the Fiji Police continue to diligently pursue unresolved cases while bolstering their operational effectiveness. With each step toward closure, the public’s faith in the police force is gradually being restored, signaling a promising future for law enforcement in Fiji.
