The Fiji Police Force has categorically dismissed allegations circulating on social media regarding corruption and interference in the investigation of a motor vehicle accident that took place on Rewa Street on December 12, 2025. The incident, which involved two vehicles, left one victim currently hospitalized.
Reports on social media suggested that the suspect was released without charge due to bribery and officer interference. However, the Fiji Police Force clarified that the suspect’s release was solely on medical grounds, as he sustained injuries during the accident. Upon receiving medical treatment, he provided a medical certificate upon his return, compelling officers to allow his release while investigations were ongoing.
Further allegations of collusion arose due to the suspect not being charged immediately. The police firmly stated that these claims are unfounded, emphasizing that there was no intention from the investigating officer to delay the charging process, nor was there any impropriety from other officers. The police explained that they were required to wait for an official medical report from the relevant authorities, which is essential for laying formal charges, and this delay was beyond their control.
The medical report was eventually received this week, leading to the suspect being charged and brought before the court on December 19. The suspect has since been granted bail and is scheduled to return to court on February 23, 2026.
Acting Commissioner of Police Aporosa Lutunauga has stated that the allegations against the police organization lack merit. He encouraged those spreading misinformation to seek verified facts through appropriate channels. Lutunauga reminded the public that while freedom of expression is a fundamental right, it comes with responsibilities, urging caution against the dissemination of unfounded claims on social media.
This incident serves as a reminder of the importance of accurate information and the potential consequences of unfounded allegations in the public sphere.
