Fiji police are ramping up their investigation into a troubling incident involving the assault and robbery of a Virgin Australia crew member outside a nightclub in Martintar, Nadi, on New Year’s Day. The female crew member was reportedly attacked during the early morning hours of January 1, prompting an urgent response from law enforcement, who are currently on the lookout for the individual responsible.

Acting Police Commissioner Juki Fong Chew confirmed the investigation is active, emphasizing their efforts to analyze CCTV footage from the area to identify potential suspects. “It’s an ongoing investigation,” stated Mr. Fong Chew. He also noted that gathering testimonies from witnesses is a key component of the police’s strategy. “There are witnesses as well, and we are trying to gather them. Once we get credible information on who that particular person is, probably we’ll make an arrest and charge the person for theft or whatever.”

In a related development, a 24-year-old farmer, Ilaisa Tanoa Degei, has recently appeared in the Nadi Magistrate’s Court facing serious charges of rape and indecent assault. The accusations stem from an incident involving another crew member of an Australian airline on the same day. The case has been transferred to the High Court in Lautoka, with the prosecution opposing bail due to the gravity of the charges. Magistrate Mareta Tikoisuva has advised Mr. Degei to submit a formal bail application. The case is set to be mentioned again on January 20.

As investigations into both matters progress, authorities remain committed to ensuring justice for the victims.

This situation highlights the necessity for vigilant law enforcement and community support in addressing crime, especially against vulnerable individuals. The police’s proactive measures to gather evidence and witness statements signal their dedication to maintaining public safety. It is hoped that these investigations will lead to swift justice and contribute to a safer environment for all.
