Fiji police have ramped up their investigation into the assault and robbery of a Virgin Australia crew member, which occurred outside a nightclub in Martintar, Nadi, on New Year’s Day. The incident took place in the early hours of January 1, and authorities are actively pursuing leads to identify the suspect involved.
Acting Police Commissioner Juki Fong Chew confirmed that the investigation is well underway. “It’s an ongoing investigation,” he stated, noting efforts to analyze CCTV footage from the area to pinpoint possible suspects. The police are also seeking to collect testimonies from witnesses present during the incident. “There are witnesses as well, and we are trying to gather them. Once we get credible information on who that particular person is, probably we’ll make an arrest and charge the person for theft or whatever,” he added.
In a related development, 24-year-old farmer Ilaisa Tanoa Degei appeared in the Nadi Magistrate’s Court on charges of rape and indecent assault stemming from the same date. He is accused of sexually assaulting a crew member from an Australian airline. The prosecution has opposed bail due to the severe nature of the charges, which are considered indictable offences. Magistrate Mareta Tikoisuva advised Degei to formally apply for bail in the High Court. The case has been postponed until January 20 for further mention.
As the investigations into both incidents progress, law enforcement officials are committed to ensuring justice is served.
Although these events are distressing, it’s important to remember that the authorities are taking significant steps to address these crimes and protect the community. Their thorough approach in gathering evidence and witness testimonies reflects a commitment to safety and justice in Fiji.
