Fiji police are ramping up their investigation into the assault and robbery of a Virgin Australia crew member that occurred on New Year’s Day near a nightclub in Martintar, Nadi. The victim, a female crew member, was reportedly attacked in the early hours of January 1. Police are actively pursuing leads to identify the suspect involved in this troubling incident.
Acting Commissioner of Police Juki Fong Chew has confirmed that the investigation remains active. “It’s an ongoing investigation,” he stated, noting efforts to review CCTV footage from the area to pinpoint potential suspects. He emphasized the importance of gathering information from witnesses as well, saying, “There are witnesses as well, and we are trying to gather them. Once we get credible information on who that particular person is, probably we’ll make an arrest and charge the person for theft or whatever.”
In a related case, 24-year-old farmer Ilaisa Tanoa Degei faced charges of rape and indecent assault in the Nadi Magistrate’s Court. These charges stem from allegations that he raped and sexually assaulted a crew member of an Australian airline on the same day, January 1. The prosecution opposed bail due to the gravity of the charges, which are classified as indictable offences. Magistrate Mareta Tikoisuva advised Mr. Degei to submit a formal bail application to the High Court. The case has been postponed to January 20 for further mention.
As authorities work diligently to bring the offenders to justice in both incidents, this highlights the commitment of law enforcement to ensure the safety and security of visitors and residents in Fiji.
This challenging scenario presents an opportunity for the community to rally together in support of victims and call for stronger safety measures, showcasing resilience in the face of adversities.
