The Fiji Police Force has reported the arrest of 76 individuals this week on drug-related charges across the country. Assistant Commissioner of Police Operations, Livai Driu, emphasized the ongoing nature of these arrests, stating that the police are taking action daily to combat drug offenses, particularly as the festive season approaches.
Among those detained, the oldest individual is a 64-year-old man who was apprehended at Ba fish market with seven sachets of dried leaves suspected to be marijuana. Additionally, a 63-year-old carpenter was arrested in Bua for possessing five green marijuana plants. Another notable arrest involved a 58-year-old man from Lautoka, found with a shopping bag containing dried leaves believed to be marijuana, along with over three thousand dollars thought to be obtained through illegal activities.
Other arrests include a 53-year-old farmer in Labasa, a 52-year-old bowser attendant in Wainibokasi, and a 51-year-old electrician from Lautoka, who was found with both marijuana and methamphetamine. The police also detained a 19-year-old farmer in Savusavu and a pair of young women in Nadi, who were caught with marijuana after failing to pay their taxi fare.
ACP Driu mentioned that various methods are used in these operations, including stop searches, roadblocks, and the deployment of K-9 units, ensuring that law enforcement remains vigilant during this busy time of year.
This proactive approach by the Fiji Police is a positive step in maintaining community safety and increasing public awareness regarding drug use. By intensifying efforts during the festive season, the hope is to deter drug-related offenses and foster a safer environment for all citizens. This emphasizes the importance of community support and cooperation with law enforcement to help diminish drug-related issues across Fiji.
