The Fiji Police Force has reported a significant increase in drug-related arrests, totaling 76 individuals over the past week. Assistant Commissioner of Police Operations, Livai Driu, emphasized that the police are actively making daily arrests for drug offenses and will ramp up their efforts during the festive season.
Among the arrests, a 64-year-old man was apprehended at the Ba fish market with seven sachets of what is believed to be marijuana. In addition, a 63-year-old carpenter from Bua was found with five green plants also thought to be marijuana. Other notable arrests include a 58-year-old man from Lautoka, who was caught with dried leaves suspected to be marijuana along with over $3,000 believed to be proceeds from drug-related activities.
The police also arrested a range of individuals, including a 53-year-old farmer in Labasa and a 52-year-old bowser attendant in Wainibokasi, both for possession of sachets believed to contain marijuana. A 51-year-old electrician from Lautoka was caught with methamphetamine, while the youngest arrested was a 19-year-old farmer detained in Savusavu for similar offenses.
Additionally, two young women from Nadi were detained for not paying their taxi fare and were found in possession of marijuana during a search. A 29-year-old man from Makoi, who attempted to bribe officers, was also arrested for having marijuana.
Assistant Commissioner Driu noted that these arrests stemmed from various operations, including searches, roadblocks, raids, and the support of the K-9 Unit. The police continue their vigilance and community outreach efforts to combat drug-related activities.
This proactive approach by law enforcement underscores their commitment to enhancing public safety, particularly during a period that often sees increased social activities. With ongoing efforts to curb drug offenses, there is hope for a safer festive season for all residents in Fiji.
