The Fiji Police Force is calling on the Government to enact specific legislation aimed at combating the increasing issue of glue sniffing, a problem that is affecting various communities throughout Fiji. Acting Commissioner of Police Juki Fong Chew emphasized the necessity of updating and revising existing laws to better equip law enforcement agencies in addressing this serious challenge.
Mr. Fong Chew remarked, “As we move forward, I think we need to review the relevant laws. We have to look at this, and how best to allow law enforcement to deal with these things. If not, the blame game will continue.” He pointed out that glue sniffing presents significant challenges for police officers, particularly because there are currently no regulations that categorize glue as an illicit substance.
He highlighted the pressing need for laws that would restrict the easy availability of glue in the market, stating, “We have requested if there could be relevant laws to cover this glue issue so that it’s not easily available out there in the market.” He further explained that without classification as an illicit substance, glue can be purchased by anyone without restrictions.
Looking toward the future, Mr. Fong Chew expressed hope that the Government will implement necessary regulations in the coming year. Such measures would empower police to tackle glue sniffing more effectively and enable them to make arrests related to this issue.
This call for legislative reform demonstrates the Police Force’s dedication to protecting communities and, in particular, safeguarding young individuals from the damaging impacts of substance abuse. As discussions around this issue gain momentum, there is optimism that new laws can help create a safer environment for all.
In summary, there is an urgent need for legislative action in Fiji to address glue sniffing, which poses significant risks to communities. The police are committed to safeguarding public health and call for the Government’s support in this critical matter. This reflects an ongoing effort to create a healthier, more secure future for Fiji’s youth.
