The Fiji Police Force has initiated preliminary investigations into allegations concerning the improper issuance of passports to children connected to individuals affiliated with the Grace Road group.
Acting Police Commissioner Juki Fong Chew stated that the subsequent actions will be guided by Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka, who will engage in further discussions on the matter. This development comes after Home Affairs and Immigration Minister Pio Tikoduadua decided to resign from his position to facilitate a fair and impartial investigation.
Tikoduadua disclosed that these passports were allegedly issued without his consent, nor did he receive approval from senior officials within the Department of Immigration. Commissioner Chew mentioned that the ongoing investigation will clarify whether the Fiji Police Force or the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC) will take the lead in this case.
This situation underscores the commitment of the Fijian government to uphold transparency and integrity within its institutions. The investigation, while challenging, offers an opportunity for accountability and reform in immigration processes, potentially leading to stronger systems in place to prevent such incidents in the future.
In summary, the inquiry into the alleged unauthorized passport issuance reflects a broader effort to maintain ethical governance in Fiji, promoting public trust in governmental operations.
