The Fiji Police Force has initiated preliminary investigations into claims regarding the unauthorized issuance of passports to children connected to individuals affiliated with the Grace Road group. Acting Police Commissioner Juki Fong Chew confirmed that the course of action will depend on guidance from Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka, following further discussions.
This development comes after Home Affairs and Immigration Minister Pio Tikoduadua announced his resignation from the ministerial position to facilitate an impartial inquiry into the allegations. Tikoduadua stated that he was unaware of the passport issuances and that they were granted without the consent of senior management within the Department of Immigration.
Chew mentioned that the ongoing investigation will clarify whether it will be led by the Fiji Police Force or the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC).
In light of this situation, it is a positive step that leaders are taking accountability by allowing for an independent investigation. Such measures can help restore public confidence in the government’s ability to address concerns regarding possible misconduct and ensure transparency within the immigration system.
This proactive approach could potentially lead to improved oversight in the future and reaffirm the commitment of Fijian authorities to uphold the integrity of their national processes.
