In a strong effort to promote integrity and restore public confidence, Acting Commissioner of Police Juki Fong Chew and senior leadership members of the Fiji Police Force have voluntarily undergone drug tests. This move is part of a comprehensive initiative aimed at ensuring a drug-free environment within the police force.
Acting Commissioner Chew highlighted the crucial role of leadership in setting a positive example for advocating a drug-free workplace. “We are finalising a mandatory drug testing policy, developed in collaboration with the Solicitor General’s Office, ensuring compliance with Fiji’s legal framework,” he stated.
Chew emphasized that it is vital for the Fiji Police Force leadership to actively engage in changing public perceptions regarding the involvement of police in drug-related activities. Members of the police’s senior ranks, including the Acting Deputy Commissioner and Assistant Commissioners, have also participated in these drug tests, showcasing a commitment to accountability.
The forthcoming mandatory drug testing policy is set to incorporate best practices from international law enforcement agencies. Acting Commissioner Chew noted the importance of this initiative in addressing widespread public concerns regarding police associations with illegal drug activities.
“We understand that trust in the police has diminished due to several factors, particularly the belief that police officers could be involved in drug-related offenses. Our objective is to cultivate a drug-free institution that operates without any corruption or misconduct,” he added.
This introduction of the drug testing policy is one among various measures being implemented to enhance accountability and professionalism within the Fiji Police Force. Chew also assured that all new policies will be meticulously developed in consultation with the Solicitor General’s Office, guaranteeing alignment with Fiji’s legal standards and best practices.
This initiative is a promising step towards not only enhancing the integrity of the Fiji Police Force but also towards rebuilding the community’s trust, creating a safer environment for all citizens.
