Fiji Police on the Hot Seat: 21 Officers Under Investigation for Drug Allegations

Twenty-one police officers in Fiji are currently on leave while facing an investigation regarding their alleged involvement in drug-related activities. This development was confirmed by Police Commissioner Rusiate Tudravu, who noted that the officers’ pay will be reduced to half depending on the seriousness of the allegations against them.

Commissioner Tudravu emphasized that this measure is part of the Fiji Police Force’s ongoing efforts to address drug issues within the community. The investigation is anticipated to conclude soon, after which decisions will be made regarding the officers’ futures in the force.

In the meantime, the Fiji Police Force is continuing its proactive approach to combat drug offenses through Operation Sasamaki. This initiative aims to enhance public safety and tackle illegal activities.

This situation echoes previous incidents within the Fiji Police Force, where officers have faced serious allegations related to drug possession and dealing. For example, a recent case involved a senior officer in the Western Division found with substances believed to be cocaine and methamphetamine, leading to stern statements from police leadership about zero tolerance for misconduct among officers.

The ongoing investigations into these officers reflect broader concerns about integrity within law enforcement, with officials highlighting the importance of maintaining public trust and the ethical conduct expected from police personnel.

As the investigations progress, there is hope that the Fiji Police Force will not only address the misconduct of the officers involved but also solidify its commitment to transparency and integrity, restoring public confidence in its ability to uphold the law. By responding decisively to these allegations, the police leadership is taking essential steps toward a more accountable and trustworthy police force.
