The Fiji Police’s Mpaisa task force has arrested two individuals for allegedly perpetrating a scam involving a fraudulent car rental scheme facilitated through a mobile money transfer application.
The accused are a 29-year-old man from Davuilevu and a 37-year-old woman from Koronivia. They reportedly utilized multiple Facebook accounts to post fictitious advertisements for car rentals. On September 17, a resident of Nadi became a victim of this scam, sending $190 via the Mpaisa app. It was only after attempting to contact the supposed renters that he realized he had been tricked, prompting him to report the fraud to the Nadi Police.
The suspects are facing serious charges, including Obtaining Financial Advantage by Deception and Dishonestly Dealing with Personal Financial Information. They are set to appear in Nasinu Magistrates Court today.
This incident highlights the ongoing challenges of online scams, especially within digital marketplaces. However, the prompt action by the victim and the response from law enforcement serves as a reminder of the importance of reporting such activities, contributing to community safety and the prevention of future fraud. As individuals become more aware of these scams, it encourages a more cautious approach in online transactions, fostering a safer environment for all.
