The Fiji Police Mpaisa task force has taken action against two individuals accused of committing financial deception through a mobile money transfer application. In their recent statement, the police announced that the suspects, who are residents of Davuilevu and Koronivia, allegedly conspired to defraud victims through a car rental scam.
On September 17, 2024, the accused reportedly created multiple Facebook accounts to advertise rental cars, instructing potential renters to make payments via the mobile app. A victim from Nadi fell prey to this scheme, sending $190 to the phone number listed in the ad. Following the payment, the victim attempted to contact the scammers but soon realized he had been scammed. This prompted him to report the incident to the Nadi Police Station.
The two suspects, a 29-year-old man and a 37-year-old woman, have been charged with one count each of Obtaining Financial Advantage by Deception and Dishonestly Dealing with Personal Financial Information. They are scheduled to appear before the Nasinu Magistrates Court today.
It’s encouraging to see law enforcement actively addressing financial scams, protecting consumers from fraudulent activities. The swift response from the police could serve as a deterrent, reinforcing the importance of vigilance when dealing with online transactions.
