In a proactive step toward enhancing integrity and restoring public confidence, Acting Commissioner of Police Juki Fong Chew, along with other senior leaders, has undergone drug testing as part of an extensive initiative aimed at ensuring a clean and drug-free Fiji Police Force. The Acting Commissioner underscored the importance of leadership setting a positive example in promoting a drug-free environment.

“We are in the process of finalizing a mandatory drug testing policy that has been developed with input from the Solicitor General’s Office, in compliance with the laws of Fiji,” stated Acting Commissioner Chew. He emphasized that police leadership must lead by example in transforming public perceptions regarding police involvement in drug-related issues.

The initiative involves not just the Acting Commissioner, but also key members of the police leadership team, including the Acting Deputy Commissioner and various Assistant Commissioners who have also participated in drug testing. Senior officers, including Directors and other high-ranking officials within the Command group, are also included in this important initiative.

The upcoming mandatory drug testing policy is anticipated to incorporate best practices from international law enforcement agencies, with Acting Commissioner Chew noting that it plays a crucial role in alleviating public concerns surrounding police engagement in drug-related activities. “We recognize that public trust in the police has been compromised due to various factors, particularly the belief that police officers are involved in drug-related crimes. Our objective is to create a drug-free institution that functions without corruption or misbehavior,” he stated.

The introduction of this policy is part of a broader strategy to ensure accountability and professionalism within the police force. Acting Commissioner Chew reaffirmed that all new policies will be meticulously designed in consultation with the Solicitor General’s Office to guarantee alignment with Fijian legal standards and best practices.

This initiative reflects a positive commitment by police leadership to restore trust within the community, demonstrating accountability and a strong stand against drug use in law enforcement. Such measures not only enhance the credibility of the police force but also signify a hopeful path toward a safer and more trustworthy Fiji.
