The Fiji Police Force has initiated preliminary investigations regarding the alleged unauthorized issuance of passports to children related to individuals from the Grace Road group. Acting Commissioner of Police Juki Fong Chew stated that the next steps in this investigation will be determined after further consultations with Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka.
This situation escalated following the decision of Home Affairs and Immigration Minister Pio Tikoduadua to resign from his ministerial position to facilitate an unbiased inquiry into the allegations. Tikoduadua emphasized that the passports in question were reportedly issued without his knowledge and without the approval of senior officials in the Department of Immigration.
Chew indicated that the preliminary investigation will help clarify whether the Fiji Police Force or the Fijian Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC) will take the lead on the case.
This investigation is a significant step towards ensuring transparency and accountability within the government’s immigration processes. It signals a commitment to uphold the integrity of public service and to address any irregularities that may arise. As the investigation unfolds, the community watches closely, hoping for a resolution that reinforces trust in the country’s governance.
In summary, Fiji’s authorities are taking steps to clarify a serious issue regarding passport issuance, highlighting a commitment to integrity and oversight in public service.
