The Fiji Police Force has initiated preliminary investigations into the suspected unauthorized issuance of passports to children connected to the Grace Road group. Acting Police Commissioner Juki Fong Chew stated that future steps will be guided by Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka after further discussions.
This development comes after Home Affairs and Immigration Minister Pio Tikoduadua voluntarily stepped down from his ministerial position to facilitate an impartial inquiry into the allegations. Tikoduadua disclosed that the issuance of the passports occurred without his consent or the approval of senior officials in the Department of Immigration.
Chew emphasized that the preliminary investigation will clarify whether the Fiji Police Force or the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC) will take the lead in the inquiry.
This situation underscores the importance of transparency and accountability in governmental processes, particularly regarding sensitive matters such as passport issuance. The proactive steps taken by Minister Tikoduadua to resign during the investigation reflects a commitment to uphold integrity in public service.
In the spirit of optimism, this investigation could pave the way for stronger regulations and procedures to prevent similar incidents in the future, fostering public trust in Fiji’s immigration system.
