The Fiji Police Force has initiated preliminary investigations regarding the suspected unauthorized issuance of passports to children associated with the Grace Road group. This action comes after the Home Affairs and Immigration Minister, Pio Tikoduadua, announced his resignation to facilitate a fair and impartial inquiry into the situation. Tikoduadua stated that the issuance of these passports occurred without his consent or the approval of senior officials within the Department of Immigration.

Acting Police Commissioner Juki Fong Chew confirmed that the investigation’s direction will be determined following further discussions with Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka. The outcome of the preliminary investigation will clarify whether the Fiji Police Force or the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC) will take the lead in the inquiry.

This situation underscores the importance of transparency and accountability in governmental processes. It is essential that the matter is investigated thoroughly to maintain public trust in the immigration system and the protection of children’s rights.

In summary, Fiji is addressing potential misconduct involving passport issuance, with steps in place to ensure a proper investigation occurs under the guidance of government leaders, highlighting the nation’s commitment to integrity and lawful practices.
