The Fiji Police Force has initiated preliminary investigations regarding the alleged unauthorized issuance of passports to children connected to the Grace Road group. Acting Commissioner of Police, Juki Fong Chew, has indicated that further actions will be guided by Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka after additional discussions.
This development comes in response to Home Affairs and Immigration Minister Pio Tikoduadua’s recent decision to resign from his position, ensuring a fair and unbiased investigation into the allegations. Tikoduadua disclosed that the issuance of these passports occurred without either his knowledge or the approval of senior officials in the Department of Immigration.
Chew noted that the initial stages of the investigation will clarify whether the Fiji Police Force or the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC) will take the lead in the inquiry.
This unfolding situation underscores the importance of transparency and accountability in governance, particularly in official processes such as passport issuance. The police’s commitment to investigate thoroughly reflects a proactive approach to maintaining the integrity of public services in Fiji.
With the support of the Prime Minister and a framework for an unbiased investigation in place, there is optimism that justice will be served and the findings could pave the way for improved protocols within the immigration system.
