Nine investigations are currently in progress by the Fiji Police Force concerning the findings of the recently released Commission of Inquiry (COI) report. Police Commissioner Rusiate Tudravu confirmed that several of these investigations were already underway by the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) prior to the COI’s release. Following a referral from President Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu, three additional investigations have been initiated, focusing on allegations of abuse of office involving individuals of interest.
One significant investigation was opened after an official complaint from Frances Puleiwai, the former Acting Deputy Commissioner of the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC), regarding alleged obstruction, abuse of office, and perverting the course of justice related to the arrest of the suspended FICAC Commissioner.
Commissioner Tudravu reiterated the police’s commitment to these investigations, which are being prioritized to ensure prompt and thorough legal scrutiny. He stated that one investigation file has already been sent to the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) for legal advice, while three more are being prepared for submission. Five investigations remain ongoing.
This proactive response to the allegations reflects a commitment to uphold transparency and accountability within Fiji’s governance structures, particularly following concerns regarding the appointment practices linked to former FICAC Commissioner Barbara Malimali. The community holds hope that these investigations will lead to essential reforms, reinforcing public trust in government institutions.
As the investigations continue, there is optimism that the actions taken by the police will not only address past grievances but will also foster a political environment characterized by ethical standards and accountability. The ongoing efforts signal a meaningful step toward enhancing governance in Fiji.
