The Fiji Police Force has initiated an investigation following two separate road incidents involving government vehicles that occurred yesterday.
The first incident took place in Lautoka when a police van transporting remanded inmates to court collided with another vehicle along the Kings Highway at Navutu. Fortunately, there were no injuries reported; however, court proceedings were suspended temporarily as a result of the accident. Both defense counsel and state attorneys were advised to wait for the arrival of the inmates, who were brought to the court shortly thereafter.
Police spokesperson Warne Bautolu confirmed the absence of injuries and noted that the investigation into this accident is ongoing. “Confirmed, no injuries. Investigation is continuing,” he stated.
In a separate incident in Tavarau, Ba, another vehicle, believed to be a government vehicle, reportedly hit an Energy Fiji Limited power pole and subsequently overturned. This incident disrupted power supply for areas including Tavarau and Tuva, prompting further investigation by the police.
These incidents highlight ongoing concerns regarding road safety and the importance of responsible driving practices, particularly involving emergency and government vehicles. The police encouragement for vigilance aligns with previous calls from traffic authorities aimed at improving safety protocols among public service vehicle drivers.
As investigations continue into these incidents, there is hope that comprehensive measures will be introduced to enhance road safety and ensure the well-being of all road users in Fiji. Both the government and law enforcement agencies are committed to fostering safer travel conditions, with the goal of preventing such accidents in the future.
This underscores a larger community effort towards improving safety standards and accountability on the roads.
