Police Commissioner Rusiate Tudravu is on a mission to restore integrity in the Fiji Police Force, urging officers to “come clean, stay clean and go out clean.” In a recent press briefing, he acknowledged the negative perceptions surrounding police conduct and expressed his commitment to upholding the constitutional responsibilities of the Commissioner’s office without succumbing to political pressures.
Mr. Tudravu emphasized the importance of focusing on community service, stating, “That is why we are here; to serve the people.” He is determined to collaborate effectively with the government and the Minister for Policing, Ioane Naivalurua, with whom he met on his first day in office. He reiterated the value of mutual respect and open communication between police leadership and governmental bodies to effectively address national concerns.
The outgoing acting commissioner, Juki Fong Chew, also announced his retirement after a commendable 36 years of service, highlighting positive relations within the organization.
Tudravu is prioritizing the escalating drug issue in Fiji, recognizing it as a significant national concern. He plans to hold briefings with senior officers to gain insights into current operations and strategize future actions against drug-related crimes.
In light of recent discussions about the military’s potential involvement in combating drug trafficking, Tudravu clarified that while the Republic of Fiji Military Forces (RFMF) are an option, he intends to make informed decisions after consulting with the military’s commander.
The emphasis on reform within the Fiji Police Force suggests a hopeful direction towards transparency and accountability, fostering a stronger relationship between law enforcement and the community. As Mr. Tudravu takes on these challenges, his commitment to integrity and the fight against crime may pave the way for a safer Fiji.
