Commissioner of Police Rusiate Tudravu has issued a stern warning to police officers regarding adherence to lawful conduct, emphasizing that any engagement in criminal activities will have serious repercussions. This statement arises in the wake of disturbing allegations involving several officers from the Valelevu Police Station, who are accused of kidnapping, assaulting, and extorting $15,000 from a businessman.

Mr. Tudravu pointed out that this is not an isolated incident; police officers have previously been under scrutiny for misconduct, which has contributed to a deteriorating public trust in the police force. He stressed that non-compliance with organizational discipline would not be tolerated, stating, “If any police officer is found guilty of illegal activities, then we need to remove them from the organization.”

In light of these events, he assured that a majority of the police force remains dedicated to professional integrity. “Our main intention is to gain the trust and confidence of the public,” he highlighted, reaffirming the necessity of accountability among officers. Investigations are ongoing, and the Commissioner indicated that further comments would be made once the inquiry concludes.

This situation recalls previous incidents in which Commissioner Tudravu has addressed police misconduct, underscoring an ongoing effort toward transparency and ethical conduct within the Fiji Police Force. The recent cases of alleged assault and corruption within the ranks serve as a critical reminder that maintaining public confidence is essential for the effectiveness of law enforcement.

As these investigations unfold, there is hope that decisive actions taken by the police leadership will yield reforms that enhance accountability and restore the community’s trust in those sworn to protect them. This commitment to upholding the law reflects a promising initiative for a police force that serves with integrity.
