The Fiji Police Force has implemented movement restrictions in the towns of Ba, Tavua, and Rakiraki due to rising water levels that have begun entering local shops. Assistant Commissioner of Police Operations, Livai Driu, emphasized that these measures are crucial for public safety and to protect the towns’ infrastructure.
Driu explained that the restrictions aim to keep residents safe and prevent damage to properties from potential looters. Currently, four evacuation centers are operational in the Western Division, accommodating 226 individuals. This number may increase if rainfall persists.
As of now, the main highway connecting Ba to Rakiraki is closed to all traffic, and Tavua Town is no longer accessible from its entrance. Additionally, the entrance to Ba Town is fully closed to traffic. Police standby teams are actively evacuating individuals from disaster zones and will remain ready to respond as the situation evolves.
This proactive response underscores the authorities’ commitment to ensuring the safety of the community during these challenging times. Residents are encouraged to stay informed and comply with safety directives to navigate through this situation effectively.
In summary, while the circumstances are challenging, the collective effort of the authorities and communities can contribute to keeping everyone safe.
