Fiji Police Honor Fallen Heroes at Emotional Remembrance Day

The Fiji Police Force held a solemn remembrance this weekend to honor the twenty-six members who passed away over the past year, with ceremonies taking place in Suva, Labasa, and Lautoka. Families of fallen officers from the Central, Eastern, Southern, and Headquarters Divisions gathered at the Nasova Police grounds to pay their respects.

Acting Commissioner of Police Juki Fong Chew presided over the Fiji Police Force 2024 Remembrance Day. He expressed that returning to the origin of their policing careers to pay tribute to their fallen colleagues was a poignant experience. “This ground marks the beginning of our careers, and today, we gather to remember our comrades who have departed and to celebrate their enduring memories,” he remarked.

The Acting Commissioner acknowledged the families of the deceased officers, stating, “We thank you for selflessly sharing their time with us. This precious time is irreplaceable, and we will forever be grateful for your unwavering support for our careers.” He reflected on the missed birthdays and significant life events that families endured while their loved ones served, emphasizing that while officers signed up for duty, families did not have that choice.

As the Fiji Police Force prepares to celebrate its 150th Anniversary in 2024, the Acting Commissioner highlighted that the Sesquicentennial celebrations on October 10th will mark a significant milestone. He noted the various historical periods that have shaped the organization and emphasized the need for the police force to focus on the present and improve as the criminal landscape evolves. “We cannot change the past, but we can learn from it and ensure we do not repeat previous mistakes.”

Additionally, during the ceremony at Nasova, eighteen members who lost their lives in the past year were honored and commemorated.
