Fiji Police Honor Fallen Heroes Amidst 150th Anniversary Preparations

The Fiji Police Force held a remembrance event this weekend to honor the twenty-six officers who passed away in the past year, taking place in Suva, Labasa, and Lautoka. Families of these fallen officers from various divisions, including Central, Eastern, Southern, and Headquarters, came together at the Nasova Police grounds to celebrate their service to the nation.

Acting Commissioner of Police Juki Fong Chew officiated the 2024 Remembrance Day for the four divisions. He expressed that being back at the place where many began their policing careers made the event a poignant experience. He remarked, “It is on this ground that we marked the beginning of our careers, and today, we gather to remember our comrades who have left us and celebrate their memories that will live on forever.”

In his tribute to the families of the deceased officers, the Acting Commissioner acknowledged their sacrifices. “We thank you for selflessly sharing their time with us. Precious time that can never be recovered, and it is for that reason that we will forever be grateful for your unwavering support towards our careers,” he stated. He emphasized the emotional toll and sacrifices these families endure, recognizing that while officers choose this path, their loved ones do not.

Looking ahead, the Acting Commissioner mentioned that the Fiji Police Force will commemorate its 150th anniversary on October 10th, 2024. He reflected on the organization’s rich history and its adaptation to the changing criminal landscape, urging current members to focus on learning from the past to improve in the future.

Additionally, the ceremony at Nasova included a tribute to eighteen members who lost their lives in the past year.
