Assistant Commissioner of Police Operations Kasiano Vusonilawe has called on frontline supervisors to prioritize effective policing and strong leadership over the pursuit of ranks and promotions. He made these remarks during the Frontline Non-Commissioned Officers (NCO) Empowerment Workshop held at the Fiji Police Academy. This event gathered 21 officers, where Vusonilawe emphasized the significant responsibilities that come with their roles as supervisors.
“You are the supervisors of those doing the work on the front line. You should know your roles and responsibilities,” ACP Vusonilawe stated, highlighting the need for a renewed focus on essential policing practices. He pointed out that it is crucial for the organization to shift its mindset away from the fixation on ranks and accolades.
Vusonilawe challenged attendees to concentrate on foundational aspects of their duties, urging them to stop merely doing their jobs for the sake of appearances. “Enough doing the work for the sake of just doing it. Enough of running after the ranks and promotions,” he declared. He encouraged the officers to focus on performing their tasks correctly, noting that promotions would follow as a natural consequence of doing good work.
He underscored that the quality of leadership exhibited by supervisors directly influences the standard of service provided to the community. “Provide quality leadership to your teams so they can provide quality service to members of the community,” he emphasized, demonstrating the importance of nurturing effective leadership practices among officers.
The three-day workshop aims to enhance the leadership and supervisory capabilities of non-commissioned officers and is set to conclude on Wednesday. This initiative signals a proactive approach towards reinforcing essential policing values and fostering a culture of effective public service within the Fiji Police Force.
