Lagi pointed out that the complexities of modern policing demand enhanced capabilities from police officers, which necessitates investment in their training and development. He remarked, “Our customers are becoming more diverse, and service is more challenging in the current environment.” Participants, like Dalip Chand from Vunivau, echoed this sentiment, stressing that collaboration between the public and the police is crucial for tackling local crime effectively.
The focus on community involvement is particularly relevant given the recent rise in crime rates reported by Minister for Policing Ioane Naivalurua, which showed a concerning trend of a 26 percent increase in January 2025 alone. Naivalurua’s initiative to enhance police capabilities is in response to this challenge, urging the need for a more robust police presence in “red zone” areas and the integration of modern technological resources to improve operational efficiency.
The development of the Fiji Police Force Strategic Plan 2025 to 2029 aims not just to address current issues but to ensure a more dedicated and responsive approach to public safety.
