The Fiji Police Force is actively working to strengthen its relationship with the community by emphasizing the importance of public engagement. This commitment was underscored by Assistant Superintendent George Lagi during the recent 2025-2029 Strategic Planning community consultative workshop held in Labasa. Lagi highlighted that gathering community feedback is essential for shaping the police force’s new vision, mission, and values.
In today’s diverse and rapidly evolving societal landscape, public input is vital. Lagi pointed out that the complexities of modern policing demand enhanced capabilities from police officers, which necessitates investment in their training and development. He remarked, “Our customers are becoming more diverse, and service is more challenging in the current environment.” Participants, like Dalip Chand from Vunivau, echoed this sentiment, stressing that collaboration between the public and the police is crucial for tackling local crime effectively.
The focus on community involvement is particularly relevant given the recent rise in crime rates reported by Minister for Policing Ioane Naivalurua, which showed a concerning trend of a 26 percent increase in January 2025 alone. Naivalurua’s initiative to enhance police capabilities is in response to this challenge, urging the need for a more robust police presence in “red zone” areas and the integration of modern technological resources to improve operational efficiency.
The development of the Fiji Police Force Strategic Plan 2025 to 2029 aims not just to address current issues but to ensure a more dedicated and responsive approach to public safety. This reflects an understanding that the traditional methods of policing need to adapt to an increasingly complex security environment. As the Fiji Police Force continues to implement these strategies, the hopeful outcome is a more collaborative and secure community where law enforcement and citizens work hand-in-hand to reduce crime and enhance overall safety.
This commitment to evolving policing practices and community engagement signals a positive path forward for Fiji, showcasing a collective effort to foster a safer and more interconnected society.
