In collaboration with New Zealand’s Crown Research Institute, the Institute of Environmental Science and Research (ESR), the Unit is focusing on vital improvements in quality control, accountability, and standard operating procedures within its services.
As part of this initiative, ESR experts are providing training and evaluations, reviewing existing policies, procedures, and the performance of personnel. This support is crucial in ensuring the Forensic Unit meets international standards necessary for obtaining accreditation, thereby reinforcing the unit’s dedication to elevating the standards of forensic services.
Moreover, this move aligns with the Pacific Policing Initiative, positioning the Fiji Police Forensics Unit as a Regional Policing Centre of Excellence. In light of previous reports highlighting challenges the Unit has faced due to a rising volume of drug cases—nearly 3,000 annually with only nine certified drug analysts available—the emphasis on raising standards through accreditation is vital.
