Fiji Police Forensics: Aiming for International Excellence

The Fiji Police Forensic Chemistry Unit is intensifying its efforts to attain international accreditation, aiming to enhance the quality and reliability of forensic services throughout the country. In collaboration with New Zealand’s Crown Research Institute, the Institute of Environmental Science and Research (ESR), the Unit is focusing on vital improvements in quality control, accountability, and standard operating procedures within its services.

As part of this initiative, ESR experts are providing training and evaluations, reviewing existing policies, procedures, and the performance of personnel. This support is crucial in ensuring the Forensic Unit meets international standards necessary for obtaining accreditation, thereby reinforcing the unit’s dedication to elevating the standards of forensic services.

Moreover, this move aligns with the Pacific Policing Initiative, positioning the Fiji Police Forensics Unit as a Regional Policing Centre of Excellence. This center will not only enhance its operational capabilities but also be a resource for providing specialized training and support to other police forces across the Pacific region.

In light of previous reports highlighting challenges the Unit has faced due to a rising volume of drug cases—nearly 3,000 annually with only nine certified drug analysts available—the emphasis on raising standards through accreditation is vital. The Forensic Unit’s commitment to improving its manpower and technical resources is critical as it continues to forge a path toward more effective law enforcement in combating drug-related crime.

Overall, the ongoing support and strategic partnerships illuminate a positive trajectory for the Fiji Police Forensic Chemistry Unit, promising significant enhancements to their operational capacity and public safety in Fiji and beyond.
