Police Commissioner Rusiate Tudravu has expressed a strong commitment to rehabilitating the public’s trust in the Fiji Police Force, highlighting this initiative as a primary focus of his leadership. Following his recent discussions with the Australian Federal Police (AFP) in Brisbane, he underscored the importance of the UPLIFT program, designed to implement recommendations from extensive consultations aimed at restoring community confidence in law enforcement.
The UPLIFT initiative is built on seven core pillars: Strategy, Planning Governance, Leadership, Integrity and Ethics, Operational Capabilities, Enabling Capabilities, and Human Resources. These pillars will provide a roadmap for significant reform within the Fiji Police, promoting effective governance, enhancing professionalism, and ultimately leading to improved community relations.
Mr. Tudravu emphasized, “Rebuilding trust and confidence is our main priority now, and we recognize that it must start within, by getting our house in order.” His acknowledgment of internal challenges illustrates an awareness of the necessity for transparency and the need to address past concerns that have compromised the police force’s reputation.
This initiative aligns with previous efforts highlighted by Minister Pio Tikoduadua, who introduced the Police Reset Strategy to reform procedures and foster a more professional police service. The collaborative approach with the AFP signifies ongoing international support, which is crucial for effective transformation within the police force.
The proactive engagement of police leadership in addressing historical issues of trust reflects a hopeful trajectory for the Fiji Police Force, aiming not only to mend the relationship with the community but also to enhance public safety overall. Continued commitment to these reforms could lead to a stronger, more effective police force, fostering a renewed sense of security and cooperation between law enforcement and the citizens of Fiji.
