The Fiji Police Force is set to enhance its operational framework with the allocation of $226.8 million for the 2024–2025 fiscal year, as reported by Assistant Superintendent of Police George Lagi. A significant portion of this budget, amounting to $180.8 million, is designated for salaries, highlighting the administration’s focus on ensuring adequate support for officers. Only $11 million is reserved for capital works, with approximately $30 million available for operational costs across the nation’s five policing divisions.

ASP Lagi emphasized the growth of the police force, which has expanded from 3,046 regular officers to 5,084 in recent years, accompanied by the establishment of support services, including a welfare unit and a medical officer alongside four psychologists. The modernization of the force is evident with the addition of 446 vehicles and improved infrastructure, aiding operational efficiency.

Moreover, advancements in drug testing technology through the digital forensic lab significantly reduce testing times from over a week to mere minutes. Enhanced facilities at various police stations are also focused on improving the working conditions for officers.

These developments come as the Fiji Police Force faces challenges associated with rising crime rates, which saw a 26 percent increase in January 2025 compared to the previous year. These statistics underscore the necessity for continuous reform in policing strategies, as noted in ongoing discussions within the government about the Police Reset Strategy aimed at modernizing the force.

Minister for Policing Ioane Naivalurua has highlighted the importance of community engagement and modern strategies to build trust between the police and the public. The ongoing collaboration with the Australian Federal Police is set to integrate additional resources and training, aiming for a more effective law enforcement presence.

The proactive measures being taken reflect a commitment to enhancing public safety and restoring confidence in the Fiji Police Force. With a focus on modernization and community-based strategies, there is a hopeful outlook that these reforms will lead to safer communities and improved law enforcement practices in Fiji.
