Acting Police Commissioner Juki Fong Chew has taken a significant step towards restoring public trust by conducting drug tests on himself and senior leadership within the Fiji Police Force. This initiative is part of a comprehensive effort to ensure a drug-free environment within the police institution and to demonstrate that leadership is committed to ethical practices.

Acting Commissioner Chew emphasized the importance of leaders setting a positive example in promoting a workplace absent of drug use. He announced that a mandatory drug testing policy is being finalized in collaboration with the Solicitor General’s Office, ensuring it complies with Fiji’s legal framework.

Acknowledging that public confidence in the police has declined due to concerns over drug-related misconduct among officers, Commissioner Chew stated that the steps being taken aim to reverse this trend. The policy will not only affect the top brass, including the Acting Deputy Commissioner and other senior officials but will also set a standard for the entire force.

The new drug testing initiative is modeled after successful practices from international law enforcement agencies and signifies a commitment to accountability and professionalism. Chew highlighted the goal of fostering a trustworthy police force that operates without corruption and adheres to the highest ethical standards.

As the Fiji Police Force implements these new policies, they not only strive to enhance their internal culture but also work towards rebuilding relationships with the communities they serve, showing that genuine steps are being taken to address public concerns.

This proactive approach signifies a hopeful shift towards greater accountability in the police force, potentially restoring the faith of the public in their law enforcement officials.
