The Fiji Police Force is actively addressing significant breaches in integrity within its ranks, particularly related to drug evidence handling. Assistant Commissioner of Police Aporosa Lutunauga has emphasized that any officers found tampering with drug exhibits will face strict accountability measures. During a session with the Parliamentary Standing Committee, he confirmed ongoing investigations into misconduct, underscoring the department’s commitment to restoring public trust as a top priority.

Lutunauga pointed out efforts to enhance internal controls to prevent future incidents, stating, “People have been taken to task, and we will continue our work and continue to take people to task if they are found to be dealing with exhibits that are supposed to be in our custody.”

In light of these issues, committee member Virendra Lal questioned the effectiveness of the recently established Narcotics Bureau in tackling drug-related crimes. Lutunauga responded positively, asserting that the bureau has significantly boosted investigation and enforcement efforts, particularly in high-risk areas.

This proactive attitude mirrors past efforts from police leadership, highlighting a zero-tolerance policy towards officers involved in drug networks. Similar previous efforts included a public appeal by Acting Commissioner Juki Fong Chew, urging community members to report credible information regarding police misconduct. The aim is to uphold the integrity of law enforcement while actively combatting the significant drug challenges facing Fiji.

The commitment from the police force to maintain transparency and collaboration with the community signals a hopeful path forward. By reinforcing ethical standards within the department and encouraging public involvement in reporting misconduct, the Fiji Police Force aims to build a more trustworthy and effective policing environment. This is not just essential for the police’s internal integrity, but also plays a crucial role in ensuring community safety and confidence.

As the investigations proceed, there is optimism that these measures will strengthen trust between the police force and the community, ultimately contributing to a safer Fiji.
