The Fiji Police Force is embarking on a significant reform initiative aimed at enhancing its operational effectiveness, particularly in light of a troubling spike in crime rates. Minister for Policing, Ioane Naivalurua, identified the urgent need for these reforms during a parliamentary session, stating that the focus for the upcoming financial year will be on “right-sizing” the organization to fulfill its mission effectively.
Naivalurua emphasized that the reforms are designed not only to ensure police officers receive proper training but also to provide the necessary support for modern policing. He pointed out that contemporary police work requires a proactive approach, concentrating on maintaining law and order, safeguarding property, and ensuring the safety of communities.
In light of rising crime statistics—which reported a 26 percent overall increase in January 2025, following a 27 percent increase in 2024—the minister has highlighted the importance of integrating advanced technologies and modern strategies. Submissions have already been made to the Ministry of Finance to secure funding for these reforms, with Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Finance, Professor Biman Prasad, indicating that the next budget will prioritize areas needing immediate support.
The Fiji Police Force is also liaising with bilateral partners to fill funding gaps, demonstrating a collaborative approach to law enforcement. The deployment of special units to high-crime areas, enhanced police visibility, and the introduction of modern policing strategies are all part of the ongoing Police Uplift Initiative. This initiative aims to modernize the force, particularly in relation to adapting to evolving crime patterns and prioritizing community engagement.
Despite the challenges presented by rising crime rates, these reform initiatives suggest a positive outlook for law enforcement in Fiji. By focusing on community collaboration and investing in modern capabilities, the Fiji Police Force is taking proactive steps to ensure public safety, signaling a commitment to rebuilding trust between the police and the communities they serve. The ongoing emphasis on a transparent and well-supported police force provides hope for a safer and more secure future for all residents.
