Fiji Police Force Reset Includes Mentorship and Increased Budget, Part of New Partnership with Australian Federal Police

The Fiji Police Force will undergo a comprehensive overhaul that includes the appointment of a mentor for a new police commissioner. This was announced by Finance Minister Professor Biman Prasad during the presentation of the 2024/2025 National Budget. The police force’s allocation has been increased by $41.7 million from last year, totalling $226.8 million for the current term.

Professor Prasad explained that the Police Reset Strategy would focus on reforming the Fiji Police Force. The plan includes the formation of a novel comprehensive strategy, restructuring to improve efficiency, and fostering a shift in organizational culture.

The Australian Government, acclaimed by Prasad, will contribute to the police capacity-building efforts. A new Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) will be signed between the Fiji Police Force and the Australian Federal Police. This agreement stipulates that Australian Federal Police officers will be integrated into the Fiji Police Force, aiding the forthcoming police commissioner.

Professor Prasad emphasized the government’s dedication to developing a police force that serves and shields every member of society without any discrimination or harassment. He underscored their commitment towards providing service efficiently, courteously, and respectfully. Notably, $2 million has also been allocated for the creation of a Narcotics Bureau within the Ministry of Home Affairs.
