The Fiji Police Force has experienced a significant wave of resignations, with over 100 officers leaving to pursue other opportunities. In response to this trend, the police are taking proactive measures by recruiting 150 special constables ahead of the upcoming busy season, as announced by Assistant Commissioner of Police Operations, Livai Driu.
Mr. Driu emphasized that this recruitment effort is not just about increasing numbers, but also serves as a necessary replacement for those who have departed the force due to resignations, terminations, retirements, and other reasons. He acknowledged the challenge posed by the resignations, noting that last year saw 120 officers leave the organization, while nearly 100 have left this year.
The current situation has placed a strain on police resources, with one officer now responsible for serving roughly 204 Fijians. Despite these challenges, Mr. Driu assured the public that the police are committed to maintaining their service levels and continuing to meet the needs of the community.
In addition, another recruitment drive is planned for next year to further bolster the police workforce, aiming to ensure adequate coverage and effective law enforcement across the region.
