Over 100 officers have stepped down from the Fiji Police Force in pursuit of new opportunities, leading to a need for bolstered manpower. In response to this development, Assistant Commissioner of Police, Operations Livai Driu, announced the recruitment of 150 special constables as the country prepares for a busy season.
Driu explained that this recruitment drive aims to not only fill the gaps left by resignations, terminations, retirements, and the passing of officers but also to enhance the overall strength of the police force. He highlighted the pressing challenge posed by the resignation rates, revealing that approximately 120 officers left last year, with nearly 100 already this year.
Currently, the police have a significant workload, with one officer responsible for the safety of over 200 Fijians. Despite these challenges, Driu reassured the public that the force remains committed to serving the community and will continue to adapt in the face of personnel shortages.
To further resolve staffing issues, another recruitment initiative is planned for next year. This proactive approach reflects the police’s dedication to maintaining public safety despite the ongoing transitions within the force.
This situation underscores the need for strong community support and adaptability within law enforcement as they strive to meet the safety and security demands of the population. By focusing on recruitment and being responsive to the challenges, the Fiji Police Force is demonstrating a commitment that will likely lead to a stronger and more resilient team in the future.
