Fiji Police Force Faces $9.98M Bill for Child Abuse Cases

In 2023, the Fiji Police Force incurred an estimated cost of nearly $9.98 million to address cases of violence against children (VAC). This substantial expenditure was highlighted in a study conducted by UNICEF in collaboration with the Ministry of Women and Children, which examined the economic ramifications of child abuse in the country.

The report indicated that approximately 6.57 percent of all registered crimes, totaling 1,101 cases, were crimes against children, according to the records kept by the Fiji Police Force. This percentage was used to calculate the direct costs associated with these crimes, drawn from the Police Force’s total operating budget of $152 million.

Additionally, the study estimated that navigating a child through the criminal court system costs around $3 million. The analysis applied the same proportion of crimes against children to the operating costs of the Fijian State Judiciary to arrive at this figure.

The report also acknowledged costs related to other government sectors, including health, child welfare, and education. In the child welfare domain, expenses arise from providing institutional and community services in response to VAC issues. Moreover, the education sector bears additional financial burdens, such as increased rates of grade repetition and demands on special education services resulting from exposure to violence.
