Fiji Police Force Eyes New Commissioner Amid Controversy

The Constitutional Offices Commission (COC) is preparing to announce the vacancy for the position of Commissioner of Police in Fiji. Minister for Home Affairs and Immigration, Pio Tikoduadua, conveyed that the COC is actively pursuing a new leader for the Fiji Police Force.

“The COC will advertise the position soon. We hope to receive applications once the advertisement is released, allowing us to appoint a permanent commissioner quickly,” stated Mr. Tikoduadua.

The vacancy was created when Sitiveni Qiliho, who was suspended on January 27, resigned earlier this month while serving a two-year prison sentence. This situation has enabled the COC to move forward with the search for a new appointee, while the role is currently filled by Acting Commissioner of Police, Juki Fong Chew.

The COC acts as an advisory body offering recommendations to the President of Fiji regarding the appointment of significant public roles, including that of the Commissioner of Police. The COC consists of six members, including the Prime Minister who serves as chairperson, the Leader of the Opposition, and the Attorney-General. Additionally, two members are appointed by the Prime Minister and one by the Leader of the Opposition.
