A new mandatory drug testing policy may soon be implemented for the entire Fiji Police Force. Acting Police Commissioner Juki Fong Chew announced that he has instructed the Force’s legal and policy division to evaluate the current drug testing practices. This review aims to transition from random drug tests to compulsory testing for all police officers and civilian staff.

Mr. Chew emphasized that the initial rollout of this new protocol will target personnel in the Commissioner’s office, including himself. He underscored the urgency of this matter, expecting a report to be submitted promptly.

His concerns were heightened following reports of officers being involved in illegal drug activities, including a recent incident where a police officer in Labasa was apprehended purchasing drugs while in uniform. Mr. Chew reassured the public that the police force would not tolerate corruption, stating that any formal complaints would be thoroughly investigated.

The Minister for Home Affairs, Pio Tikoduadua, also acknowledged the necessity for reforms within the police force, highlighting the need for a reset towards professionalism, while recognizing the many dedicated officers serving the community.

This initiative demonstrates a proactive approach to maintaining integrity within the police force and assures the public of a commitment to transparency and accountability.

Optimistically, the introduction of compulsory drug testing could reinforce the public’s trust in law enforcement and promote a healthier, more reliable police organization.
